The Department of Construction is gathering opinions from multiple units on the management and use of pavements in the city. Hanoi on Dec. 16 had already allow vehicles to be parked on the roadway of 234 streets.
Based on suggestions by local authorities, 899 sidewalks have been surveyed so that they can be considered to be rented. Over 90% of the streets surveyed are being used for food and beverage business activities.
The department outlines several criteria for a sidewalk to be used for business purposes, including a minimum width requirement of 3 m and sufficient parking spaces.
District authorities will need to seek opinions from families living on streets approved for business in order to reach consensus. Streets can be approved for business use for up to a year. The fee for using parts of the sidewalks for either parking vehicles or business purposes would be between VND20,000-40,000 (US$0.79-1.57) per m2 per month.
Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem District is currently the only district that allows sidewalks to be rented for business purposes. The rental fee is VND45,000 per m2 per month.
