The central traffic police department said 67 people were killed in 129 road and rail accidents between April 29 and May 3, and 90 others were injured.
With the Hung King's Death Commemoration falling on April 29, Reunification Day being on April 30 and Labor Day on May 1, it became a five-day holiday since two of them fell on a weekend.
Of the accidents, 125 happened on roads, killing 64, and the remaining four were at railroad grade crossings, killing three.
Last year there had been 63 deaths in 120 traffic accidents over a four-day holiday.
Also this year 49,300 road, waterway and railroad drivers were fined VND108 billion (US$4.6 million) for violating rules.
Police seized 847 cars and more than 20,000 motorbikes and revoked more than 11,000 driving licenses.
