The girl was pedaling her toy tricycle in the family's front yard in Ngoc Ly Commune, Tan Yen District, as she was watched by her grandfather. She suddenly turned into the street and fell into an open drain hole, which was around one meter deep.
The grandfather screamed for help and his neighbors rushed to lift nearby manhole covers, finding the girl around 10 meters away.
The girl was wrapped in blankets and rushed to a hospital for examination. She is stable and is expected to be released on Thursday.
An eyewitness said the water was flowing fast in the drain and the girl was lucky she had not gotten stuck at an intersection.
Do Duc Duy, chairman of Ngoc Ly Commune, said that the area on the road where the drain was left open is under construction. Duy said police have been asked to find out who is responsible.
