On the afternoon of April 24 Sabri Bejandi Mehdi, 45, Aslrosta Maddi, 43, and Salehi Rad Hossein, 41, went to a shop in Quang Thang Ward in the province's capital city, also named Thanh Hoa, to buy things.

They gave the owner a US$100 note and pretended to wait for the change.

While the person was preoccupied with the calculations, they grabbed VND100 million from the counter and fled.

The police began an investigation and apprehended the three men this month while they were traveling to Ho Chi Minh City.

They admitted to using fake passports to enter Vietnam as tourists and stealing from many shops across the country.

Their usual ploy was to pay in dollars or euros to distract the cashier or store owner and steal money, the police said.

They did not indicate how long the men have been in Vietnam or how much they have stolen.
