At a meeting with the city People’s Council on Thursday, members of the public requested the city to check and repair broken cameras.
Nguyen Dai Dong, deputy director of the city police, said of the 1,500 cameras that are still working, only 526 have good image quality.
But there are no funds to repair or maintain the cameras regularly, he said.
The police have urged city authorities to maintain the functioning cameras and repair those in some strategic locations to ensure security, he said.
In September the People’s Council approved a project to modernize the operation center and the public camera system for traffic safety and security.
It is expected to be carried out by 2026 with cameras capable of facial and license plate recognition and automatic alerts being installed.
