Six Hanoi districts are all set to trial a public bicycle sharing service, with rentals as low as VND5,000 (20 cents) for 30 minutes.

The city People's Committee on Thursday approved a proposal by the Department of Transport, but said it should not overlap with an electric bike service to increase connectivity with BRT bus lines launched earlier this week.

After a 12-month trial it will be evaluated.

The department has given the green light to Tri Nam Group Joint Stock company to provide 1,000 bicycles, half of them electric, at 94 locations. It is expected to cost VND30 billion.

Ba Dinh District will get 340 bikes and Dong Da, 100. The rest will be distributed between Tay Ho, Hoan Kiem, Thanh Xuan, and Hai Ba Trung.

A normal bike will cost VND5,000 for 30 minutes, while an electric bike will cost double that.

For a full day they will cost VND60,000 and VND120,000.

Other localities to have or trial public bike sharing are Ho Chi Minh City and Quy Nhon in the south central Binh Dinh Province.
