Vietnamese students are the fifth biggest group of international students in the U.S., despite a drop in number, according to the Institute of International Education (IIE).

An Open Doors report regarding international education exchange, announced Monday, said that in the 2021-2022 school year, there were around 948,000 international students from over 200 countries and territories studying in the U.S., a 4% increase from the previous school year.

Among them were 20,713 Vietnamese students, accounting for 2% of all international students and contributing $721 million to the U.S. economy, standing in the top five of all international students.

Vietnam was ranked 8th during the 2010-2011 school year, 9th in the 2014-2015 school year and 6th in the 2015-2016 school year.

Before the 2019-2020 school year, the number of Vietnamese students in the U.S. was steadily rising over 18 years.

The number has fallen in three recent school years, from 24,392 students in 2018-2019 to 23,777 during 2019-2020 and 21,361 during 2020-2021.

The number of Chinese students in the U.S. still ranks at the top, with 290,086 students, accounting for 31% of all international students. Next in line are students from India, South Korea and Canada.
