Bui Van Tung, 49, was riding his motorbike on the Canal 15 Road when it collided with a drone Chau Thieu Van, chairman of My Hiep Son Commune, said Tuesday.
The collision happened on Nov. 20 as the drone, which weighs around 20 kg, was being controlled by Mai Van Linh, 29, spraying pesticide onto fields, Van added.
The drone’s wings injured Tung in the head and neck. He was taken to hospital, but later died.
A police and military investigation is ongoing. Authorities are trying to find out if Linh has a license to control the drone.
Drones have been used by farmers in Vietnam to take care of their fields and orchards thanks to their high effectiveness and versatility. However, they do carry risks of accidents.
Recently, a drone in Long An got tangled with local power lines, affecting tens of thousands of families.
The usage of drones must be approved by the Ministry of National Defense, in accordance with Vietnamese regulations.
