The AI tool, named Meta AI, is a direct competitor to ChatGPT and is expected to be launched in Vietnam later this year.
"We are proud to be the only major tech company in Silicon Valley offering free AI tools to Vietnamese users," said Nick Clegg, Meta's President of Global Affairs, during a media meeting at the Innovate Vietnam 2024 event in Hanoi on Tuesday.
Meta AI utilizes the Llama model developed by Meta, functioning similarly to ChatGPT. Clegg emphasized that this open-source large language model supports Vietnamese, helping local businesses avoid the high costs of developing their own AI systems.
In addition, Meta revealed that its AI for businesses, integrated with Messenger, has been tested in Vietnam since June and will officially launch by the end of this year. This AI product may also be integrated into platforms like WhatsApp.
Meta's expansion in Vietnam includes the production of the Quest 3S mixed-reality device, introduced at the end of September with a starting price of US$300. The decision to choose Vietnam as the manufacturing hub is expected to create 1,000 jobs and contribute millions of dollars to the country's economy.
"Vietnam continues to be a key nation for Meta, with millions of small businesses and consumers using our platforms," Clegg added.
Meta also announced a partnership with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, to offer AI-related credits for students starting in March 2025. This program aims to enhance the skills of both teachers and students, promoting safe and responsible AI use.
Meta, known for platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, as well as VR/AR headsets, has been expanding its presence in Vietnam since 2015, collaborating with various ministries and departments on digital economy and innovation initiatives.
