A man in the central province of Nghe An sold off his 13-year-old daughter to human traffickers for VND100 million ($4,367) to treat his heart condition.

Lo Pho Pheng, 47, was sentenced to 14 years in jail by Nghe An People’s Court on Thursday for "trafficking of a person under 16". Moong Thi Xum, 46, and Lo Thi Cam, 35, received 13 years and 12 years on the same charge.

Pheng had a heart condition, which resurfaced in 2018. As he lacked money for treatment, Pheng met with Cam and proposed selling his own 13-year-daughter to China.

Pheng's daughter was later taken to China by Xum and another unnamed person and got sold off to a man for over VND150 million.

Later, Pheng received VND100 million, Xum VND7 million, and Cam VND13 million. The daughter returned to Vietnam in 2021 and reported everything to authorities.

In court, Pheng said he "didn't think straight" due to his poverty and lack of knowledge. The daughter asked the court to be lenient on her father.
