Doan Van Den, 30, and a woman named Van, 41, were in a relationship. Recently, the two started to have disagreements so Van broke up with Den.
Den went to Van's home on Thursday afternoon, hit her, and then took her motorbike, phone, VND1.3 million (US$53), and left.
Later the same afternoon, he went to the school of Van's son, a first grader, to pick up the boy. He told the teacher he was the boy's father.
Van went to the school later and realized her son had been kidnapped, so called the police.
After an hour of searching, police located Den as he was driving the boy away from the city center on a motorbike.
As police chased him, Den dumped the motorbike and tried to escape with the boy, but was taken down by the police.
The boy was unharmed.
