Huynh Ngoc Tan, 38, was found guilty of rape, rape of a person under 16 and molestation of a person under 16.
Since 2013, Tan had been living with a woman with two daughters of her own, now aged 17 and 20.
From 2014 to 2017, Tan threatened and raped both girls several times. The elder girl, who has a cognitive deficit problem, was found pregnant in April 2017 when her mother took her for a health check. She gave birth to a child in November the same year. Tests later proved that the child was Tan’s.
His sexual abuse of the girls came to light after Tan was arrested in 2018 for a drug-related crime.
Five children were raped or physically abused daily in Vietnam between 2015 and the first half of 2019, according to data from the Ministry of Public Security.
Many cases of abuse occur in places considered safe such as home and schools, and abusers are people close to the victims like fathers and teachers.
