A man in central Vietnam's Ha Tinh Province was arrested Thursday for smuggling 10 kilograms of methamphetamine for VND150 million ($6,411).

Bien Van Truong, 35, was caught at around 8 p.m. on Wednesday by Ha Tinh border guards as he was trying to flee from a taxi passing through Vu Quang District.

Officers found a black plastic bag inside the car containing 10 kilograms of meth, worth around VND500 million.

Truong said the drugs were from Laos and that he was hired by a stranger to hide the bag in Cam Xuyen District before delivering it to Binh Duong Province that borders HCMC for VND150 million.

Vietnam has been identified by security agencies as a key trafficking hub for narcotics despite having some of the world's toughest drug laws.

Those convicted of possessing or smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of meth face the death penalty.
