Hanoi prosecutors have charged an 86-year-old man with raping a six-year-old girl.

According to the investigation, on the evening of June 30 last year Duong Van Toan, who lives in Long Bien District, was on his way to chuck out the family trash when he saw a girl playing on her own in front of her house.

He asked to take her home and she followed him.

The next morning the girl told her mother the man had taken off her clothes and abused her. Her family reported the incident to police.

The indictment said Toan had raped the girl at his house for 10 seconds and sent her home.

When the mother approached Toan to question him, he reportedly told her: "I’d like to apologize if I have done anything wrong to your daughter. I promise it won’t happen again."

There was no semen in the girl’s body, according to a forensic examination.

Toan is currently on bail, staying at a nursing home in Hanoi.

The maximum punishment for child rape in Vietnam is death.
