Long An Province that borders HCMC will inoculate more than 1.3 million people above 18 years old against Covid-19 starting this month.

Anyone working and living in the Mekong Delta province, regardless of household registration, could get the shot, the provincial administration said Thursday.

The province added it would need more than 2.5 million vaccine doses for the campaign, its biggest ever.

Carried out in August and September, the program would give priority to Covid frontline workers and those above 65.

On August 9, it would commence inoculation of more than 850,000 in Tan An Town and districts nearby Ho Chi Minh City like Ben Luc, Duc Hoa, Can Duoc, and Can Giuoc, which are currently hit hardest by Covid-19.

On September 6, it would move on to vaccinate 500,000 others in nine districts and one town.

So far, the province has vaccinated 126,144, with 21.193 receiving two doses.

Long An has recorded 8,165 community infections since the new wave hit Vietnam in late April, while 83 patients have died.

It is now the third-worst hit locality after HCMC with 112,479 cases, and Binh Duong Province with 22,700.
