Join Hope Foundation to support communities hit by floods

VnExpress's Hope Foundation has relaunched its flood support campaign to aid residents and schools impacted by storms, floods, and landslides.

Vietnam has recently been hit by a devastating series of consecutive storms and heavy rains stretching from the north to the south central region. In November alone, prolonged heavy rains triggered deadly landslides, flash floods, and severe flooding across the central region, with significant impact in Gia Lai, Dak Lak, and Khanh Hoa, resulting in extensive loss of life and property.

Consequently, both road and railway traffic in many areas were paralyzed. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of students were forced to take extended breaks from school, unable to continue learning remotely due to limited equipment, power, and connectivity.

The crisis was severely compounded by Typhoons Fengshen and Kalmaegi at the end of October, which brought historic, prolonged floods to Hue and Da Nang.

According to a report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, natural disasters between October and Nov. 13 resulted in 90 people dead or missing and 273 injured. The damage included 1,900 collapsed houses, over 227,000 damaged houses, and more than 160,000 hectares of rice and crops destroyed.

Over 3,570 livestock and more than 452,000 poultry were killed. Nearly 700 boats sank or were damaged, over 63,000 fishery cages were swept away, and 253 km of roads were eroded. The estimated total damage reached nearly VND30,000 billion, which could reduce national GDP growth by 0.2 to 0.4%.

Earlier, in September and October, Typhoons Bualoi and Matmo also caused widespread flooding and landslides in the north and north central regions. The Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention reported that by the afternoon of Sept. 30, localities recorded 26 deaths, 22 missing people, and over 100 injuries. The two storms completely collapsed 88 houses and damaged or blew off the roofs of over 135,000 houses, heavily concentrated in Ha Tinh (more than 84,000) and Nghe An (more than 44,000). Nearly 14,000 houses were flooded, mainly in Lao Cai, Thanh Hoa, and Nghe An. The combined effect of heavy rain and floods has damaged hundreds of schools, with many suffering collapsed walls, blown-off roofs, flooded playgrounds, and destroyed teaching equipment and boarding facilities.

To support residents in stabilizing their lives and to rebuild the schools damaged by the storms and floods, the Hope Fund – VnExpress newspaper is continuing the campaign, "Overcoming floods."

Every contribution, no matter how small, is deeply meaningful at this time. We are committed to direct coordination and ensuring full transparency for all contributions received.
