The Ho Chi Minh City transport department wants to open an exclusive lane for cyclists and pedestrians along Hanoi Highway, a vital route at the city's eastern entrance.

Tran Quang Lam, director of the HCMC Department of Transport, has requested the Roads Management Center and relevant authorities to look into opening a separate lane for cyclists and pedestrians along Hanoi Highway. Plans must be sent to the department within July, he said.

The decision followed a governmental resolution to maintain traffic safety and combat congestion, which considers a bicycle lane in HCMC. Currently, bicycles and motorbikes simultaneously utilize Hanoi Highway.

The exclusive bicycle lane would include a portion of land running along the highway, spanning four kilometers from Rach Chiec Bridge to Sai Gon Bridge.

Hanoi Highway, the eastern entrance to HCMC, spans 15 kilometers and connects to National Highway 1 through Binh Duong and Dong Nai provinces, both major industrial hubs. Besides the main route, the highway has two parallel roads on the side. HCMC’s first metro line would also pass through the location.

Late last year, downtown HCMC had already rolled out a bicycle rental program as a trial to increase traffic connectivity for those who use buses and metro lines.
