HCMC has launched AI software that is capable of collecting and analyzing social media data from popular platforms like Facebook and YouTube.

HCMC Social Beat offers a general view of Internet trends and categorizes public views of them, whether positive, neutral or negative, the city Department of Information and Communications said Tuesday.

It uses AI and machine learning technologies for data analysis.

It would help organizations manage and shape public opinion by monitoring and analyzing Internet trends and thoughts, but also help monitor information on hostile forces who take advantage of the Internet to go "against authorities and policies," a department spokesperson said.

Lam Dinh Thang, director of the department, said the city has over 10 million people with 22 million social media accounts and 350 social media platforms. It also has the highest number of content creators in the country, he said.

Every week the department receives at least 10 complaints about online activities, and there was a requirement for a tool capable of collecting and evaluating data and learning about public opinion to facilitate policymaking, he said.

"Social Beat helps to save time, human resources and investments."

The system had analyzed that 65% of information about the city was positive, 25% was neutral and 10% was negative during the seven-day Tet holidays from Feb. 8-14, he said.

The city could use this data to make appropriate adjustments, he added.

Social Beat is available to the entire city, but departments and localities have their own separate accounts to access it.
