Vietnam recorded 174 new local Covid-19 cases Wednesday noon, including 35 in HCMC, pushing the southern metropolis's coronavirus tally in the new wave to 1,015.

The other 128 cases were recorded in the northern province of Bac Giang, eight in its neighbor Bac Ninh, two in Ha Tinh and one in the north central province of Nghe An.

All the cases in Bac Giang and Bac Ninh are associated with existing outbreaks either in the community or in industrial parks.

29 cases in HCMC had made contact with confirmed coronavirus patients, and six others were linked to the Covid-19 cluster at the HCMC Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

The two cases in Ha Tinh had made contact with Covid-19 patients as well.

The case in Nghe An, a 32-year-old man, is being contact traced to find the source of infection.

Since the new wave broke out seven weeks ago, Vietnam has recorded 8,262 infections in 40 of its 63 cities and provinces. Bac Giang led with 4,590 cases, followed by Bac Ninh with 1,432, and HCMC.
