Thick fog blanketed northern Vietnam on Friday, causing numerous flight delays and diversions, as authorities warn that the weather conditions are expected to persist, potentially affecting flights in the coming days.

LeadThe Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) reported that reduced visibility at northern airports severely impacted airline operations.

At Vinh Airport in Nghe An province, Vietnam Airlines diverted five flights to Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi and delayed four others, creating a ripple effect of delays across its schedule. VietJet Air diverted two flights from Vinh and Tho Xuan in Thanh Hoa Province to Noi Bai and delayed five additional flights.

To address the disruptions, airlines arranged bus transportation to help passengers reach their intended destinations. Vietnam Airlines, for example, provided buses from Noi Bai Airport to Vinh and Thanh Hoa.

The CAAV forecasts continued fog at key airports in northern and north central Vietnam, including Noi Bai, Cat Bi (Hai Phong), Tho Xuan, and Vinh, as well as several central and Central Highlands airports. These conditions pose significant risks for aviation during the busy Lunar New Year travel season.

To minimize passenger inconvenience, airlines have implemented flexible service plans. Passengers on flights delayed by two hours or more will be offered meals, and those affected by diversions will have transportation costs from alternative airports to their original destinations fully covered.

Vietnam Airlines has advised passengers to stay updated on weather conditions and flight schedules through its official channels.

Authorities have instructed airlines to keep passengers informed of flight statuses and implement solutions to mitigate disruptions. The CAAV has also pledged to closely monitor weather developments and issue timely directives to prioritize passenger safety and ensure smooth flight operations during this peak travel period.
