The deputy Party leader of the northern Vinh Phuc Province and a former Party leader and chairman of the central Quang Ngai Province were arrested Wednesday for bribery.

The two men, Pham Hoang Anh, 49, and Le Viet Chu, 61, are under investigation for involvement with Phuc Son Group JSC.

They are accused of receiving bribes from Nguyen Van Hau, chairman of Phuc Son, a leading construction and real estate company in the north, to help it win bids for projects in the two provinces, Ministry of Public Security spokesman Lieutenant General To An Xo said.

A number of other provincial leaders have also been arrested over the past month, including Vinh Phuc Province chairman and Party secretary Le Duy Thanh and Hoang Thi Thuy Lan, and Quang Ngai Province chairman and former chairman Dang Van Minh and Cao Khoa.

All of them face charges of "taking bribes."

On Feb. 26 the company's chief, Hau, was detained for allegedly violating accounting regulations, causing "serious consequences."

Three company employees were also arrested on the same charge.

The police initially determined that the accused had committed forgery, perjury and selective book-keeping, all of which "caused serious damage to the state."

They said their violations caused losses of more than VND640 billion (US$26 million) to the government.
