Ho Chi Minh City police are searching for a man who scammed people into paying him with false promises that he would send them abroad to work.

Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, 35, is wanted for "fraudulent appropriation of property," police announced Thursday.

According to the investigation, Nguyen used the legal entity of Namico Labor Supply Co. Ltd based in District 12 and advertised the service of recruiting laborers to work abroad on high salaries.

Many people registered for the program and paid several fees to work abroad.

After a while, the victims received no response from Nguyen when they tried to contact him.

They later reported him to the police.

Police said Nguyen swindled more than VND4.3 billion (US$170,000), though they did not reveal how many people he scammed.

Namico Labor Supply Co. Ltd is not allowed to send people abroad for work, they said.

Nguyen still remains at large, with police having issued a warrant for his arrest.
