A man in northern Vietnam has received jail terms for breaking into two stores and stealing 42 phones while working as a police officer.

A court in Hai Duong Province sentenced Nguyen Viet Khanh, 26, to nine years in prison on Thursday.

According to the verdict, Khanh was a police officer working at a detention center of the Police Department in Quang Ninh Province, which borders Hai Duong.

In June, he was in need of money so he decided do a burglary.

On June 14, he drove a motorbike from Quang Ninh to Hai Duong, bringing along a hammer, chisel, and crowbar.

He broke into a fashion store in Kinh Mon Town using the tools and stole one smartphone, some cash, and several clothes that cost a total of more than VND3 million (US$123).

The next day, he burgled an FPT Shop store in the town at 2 a.m. and took 41 smartphones worth more than VND935 million.

A security team of FPT caught him on a security camera. He was caught red-handed before he could leave the store.

Before the trial, Khanh resigned as a police officer. Khanh’s family has compensated FPT Shop VND15 million and the fashion shop VND2 million.
