A burglar broke into a residence in Lucknow, the capital city of Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, and dozed off in the air-conditioned living room before he could attempt a theft.

The incident took place on Sunday night as the thief broke into a locked and vacant house owned by doctor Sunil Pandey, The Times of India reported.

He broke the gate of the house with the purpose of stealing but soon fell asleep in the air-conditioned living room.

Neighbors realized the house had been broken into and reported it to the police.

When the police arrived, they found the man sleeping comfortably on the floor of the living room with the air conditioner on.

A picture shared online and confirmed to be of the thief by police shows him holding a mobile phone in his right hand and in a deep sleep with a cushion placed under his head, according to India Today.

It was the police who woke him.

Police said he appeared to be drunk and cited the alcohol for the reason why he was asleep.

They added that further action would be taken.

Reuters said Monday that India's severe heat wave this summer was suspected to have killed more than 100 people and made tens of thousands ill.

Searing temperatures beginning in March touched 50 degrees Celsius (122 F) in capital Delhi and nearby state of Rajasthan in May due to a confluence of factors, a trend scientists say has been worsened by human-driven climate change.
