At a meeting with the authorities of Khanh Hoa on Friday, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) suggested that the runway be built at one of the three locations lying 400 meters, 760 meters and 2,050 meters from the existing second runway.
The third runway is part of a plan to expand Cam Ranh airport in the 2021-2030 period to raise its capacity to 28 million passengers in 2030.
The CAAV also proposed two solutions to renovate the airport.
The first solution will retain the scale of all existing runways and only upgrade the first, while building two more taxiways.
The second solution will cost more and serve to rebuild the first runway at a location 360 meters away aside from building eight more taxiways.
Regarding the proposal to build the third runway, Khanh Hoa Deputy Chairman Nguyen Anh Tuan ordered the review of all technical issues and operational conditions as well as the runway’s impact on the overall infrastructure planning of the province.
Cam Ranh currently boasts two passenger terminals for domestic and international flights that spread across nearly 65,000 square meters in total to serve 6.65 million passengers, two runways and three parking lots.
It has no cargo terminal.
