The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has proposed to build a parking lot near the domestic terminal of Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport to relieve congestion.

In a proposal sent to the Ministry of Transport, the CAAV said it wanted a 1.3 hectare plot of land near the T1 terminal to build a parking lot.

The proposal came as an existing parking lot in front of the T1 terminal is growing too overcrowded. The parking lot, spanning 17,800 square meters, has around 555 slots for cars, according to the CAAV.

Amid high summertime travel demand, more and more visitors are coming to Noi Bai, with over 104,000 recorded on June 25. In the early days of July, the number of visitors could reach 110,000, a 40 percent increase compared to peak periods in the summer of 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic.

The number of people using personal vehicles at the airport has also increased, causing frequent traffic jams in front of the T1 terminal. It has been cited by the CAAV as a reason why there should be another parking lot near the T1 terminal.
