4-month-old girl swept away as border district hit by flash floods

A four-month girl drowned, 15 houses were swept away and hundreds flooded as heavy rains lashed Ky Son District in Nghe An Province from Saturday night.

The sight of cars and housing appliances swept away in rushing waters reflected the scale of the disaster.

The rainfall started Saturday night in Ky Son District, which borders Laos, and flooding began at around 4 a.m. as water rushed down from upstream areas.

At 8 a.m. water levels rose to 2 metes, forcing many residents to carry their belongings to higher areas.

"We lost all of our stuff on the first floor in the mud and water which is now 1.5 meter high. My husband, children and I were only able to run to the second floor to save ourselves," said Lan, a local resident.

At least 15 houses were swept away and many others flooded. Two cars and several motorbikes have gone with the water, but no one was reported inside the cars it happened.

Due to the effects of Storm Noru, Nghe An has recorded rainfall of 300 to 600 millimeters from September 27 to 29.

So far seven people in the province have died and close to 20,000 houses have been flooded.
