An endangered green sea turtle that had beached in the central Quang Tri Province has been released back into the ocean.

The animal weighing around 100 kg and 1.16 m long was found by seven locals in Vinh Thai Commune, Vinh Linh District, at around 5 p.m. Saturday.

Experts from the Con Co Island marine conservation area arrived to check the turtle’s health and tag it before releasing it.

Nguyen Van Hoa, its director, said the turtle was the fourth to be rescued and released back into the sea this year.

The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) is classified as endangered in the IUCN Red List.

It is one of five sea turtle species living in the waters off Quang Tri.
