VnExpress Marathon Hue opened registration on Feb. 26 for its sixth season, with adjustments aimed at enhancing the half marathon (21km) experience.

Returning to the former imperial capital, the race is scheduled for April 19. The organizing committee said that to reinforce the message "Run through the ancient citadel," the full marathon (42km) will be temporarily suspended this year, allowing organizers to focus on optimizing the half marathon and shorter distances of 5km and 10km.

The revised format ensures the entire racecourse remains within Hue's distinctive cultural and historical areas, removing sections located far from the city center. Organizers say the change is expected to improve safety management while offering runners a more immersive route.

The super early-bird registration phase runs from Feb. 26 to March 13, enabling participants to plan training and travel in advance. Entry fees are VND380,000 ($14.59) for 5km, VND490,000 ($18.81) for 10km, and VND720,000 ($27.64) for 21km, with prices increasing in later phases.

Last season saw strong performances from young athletes across multiple distances. In the men's 42km event, Huynh Anh Khoi (born 2003) finished first in 2:37:07, while Pham Thi Hong Le (1998) won the women's race in 2:56:46.

The 21km titles went to Le Van Huong (2002) and Hoang Thi Ngoc Anh (2006). At 10km, Ba Van Han (2005) and Bui Ngan (2001) secured victories, while Nguyen Van Khang (2005) and Nguyen Thi Thu Ha (2002) led the 5km races.

For many participants, the Hue event offers more than competition. The route runs along the Huong River, crosses Truong Tien Bridge, and passes through the Imperial Citadel, with tree-lined streets contributing to the city's tranquil atmosphere.

Since its debut in Hue in 2020, VnExpress Marathon has become a regular fixture for Vietnam's running community, with each season drawing growing participation and supporting local tourism promotion.

Last year's edition coincided with the Hung Kings' Commemoration Day holiday from April 4 to 7, attracting around 109,000 visitors and runners during race week. Tourism revenue reached an estimated VND221 billion ($8.4 million), roughly triple the figure recorded during the same period in 2024.
