SEA Games gold medalist Nguyen Trung Cuong said he ran faster after being chased by a dog while participating in a cross-country race in Hai Duong.

In the event, the star steeplechaser finished first in the race in the northern province.

On Feb. 26 he was taking part in a 15 km race when, while running through a residential area, he was suddenly chased by a dog.

He said: "The running path was quite nice. One special thing was that I was chased by a dog while running.

"From a normal pace, I increased my speed and maintained it when I was chased by the dog. My time was 47 minutes and 38 seconds."

Cuong, 24, won the SEA Games 3,000m steeplechase last year. At the 2023 National Athletics Championships too he won this event.

Being chased by dogs is not uncommon in marathons, however.

Last year Kenya’s Robert Kimutai Ngeno experienced it during a marathon in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

He had been leading the race, but at the 38th kilometer, a dog suddenly started chasing the 29-year-old, making him lose focus and finish third.
