"Not record-breaking or winning but Lederfien got all eyes on him in every marathon when he ran with a pineapple on his head," Spanish newspaper Marca wrote.
During the marathon in Seville on Sunday, to everyone's surprise, Lederfien balanced the pineapple on his head and didn’t let it drop even once throughout the 42-km marathon and finished after 3 hours, 21 minutes and 48 seconds.
Lederfien began to run with a fruit on his head in 2019. That year, he finished 11 marathons with a pineapple, which has become a tradition for him since then.
Before Seville, he also attended other major marathons like New York, Vienna, Berlin and Valencia, where he finished the half marathon in 1 hour and 57 minutes and the full marathon in 4 hours and 12 minutes with a pineapple.
Lederfien began to run when he was 53, with diabetes, high blood pressure and 130 kg of weight. A year later, he attended his first marathon and finished it in four hours. In addition to pineapple, Lederfien also ran a marathon with a flask or a Coca-Cola bottle.
He opened an Instagram account with the name pineapple.marathon.runner, where he uploaded his journey around the world. Lederfien explained that he always put fruit on his head while running to make people aware of the importance of fruit consumption.
"Fruit is one of the most important foods to humans and I want to spread this message to the world," Lederfien said in an interview with Russia Running. "The connection between human and nature, body and mind cannot be separated. Therefore, the pineapple must remain on my head even at high speed."
After the Seville Marathon, Lederfien announced on Instagram that he is practicing with a watermelon on his head for a 10 km race.
