Weak cooling, repeated frost or moisture buildup, unusual noises and costly repairs can indicate that an aging refrigerator is nearing the end of its useful life.

Refrigerators generally last about 10 to 15 years, appliance repair specialist Ian Palmer-Smith told Martha Stewart. The following warning signs may suggest that replacement is worth considering.

It no longer keeps food cold enough

An appliance thermometer can be used to check the temperature. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends keeping the refrigerator at 4 degrees Celsius or below and the freezer at -18 C.

Food may become unsafe before there are obvious changes in smell or appearance, so cooling problems should be addressed promptly.

Before arranging repairs, check that the temperature setting has not been changed accidentally, the door closes properly and food is not blocking the vents, Which? advises.

If temperatures remain too high, a technician can inspect the appliance. The type of fault and repair cost can help determine whether fixing or replacing it makes more sense.

Frost or moisture repeatedly builds up

A damaged door seal can allow warm, humid air to enter, causing condensation, frost and ice to form, refrigerator specialist Brianna Watson said.

The rubber gasket should be checked for dirt, cracks, distortion or gaps. Replacing a worn seal may be enough to solve the problem.

Some condensation is normal, but persistent dampness, excessive ice or food freezing inside the refrigerator compartment may indicate a fault. The settings and air vents should be checked before repairs are arranged.

It starts making persistent strange noises

A low hum or occasional cracking noise during defrosting can be normal, but a new sound that continues should be investigated.

The cause may be relatively minor, such as a loose water tray, or more serious, such as a compressor problem.

A technician can identify the source. Minor faults may be inexpensive to fix, while compressor replacement can be costly enough to make buying a new refrigerator a better option.

Repairs are becoming too expensive

Before replacing the appliance, check whether it is still under warranty and obtain a repair estimate.

Some fixes, such as replacing a damaged door seal, are relatively inexpensive, while compressor problems usually require professional repairs and can be costly, according to Consumer Reports.

Its research suggests that repairing a refrigerator less than 10 years old is often more economical than replacing it. However, the model, original price and overall condition also matter.

The repair cost can then be compared with the price of a suitable replacement, taking into account the refrigerator’s age, condition and remaining warranty coverage.
