A Malaysian woman, who was scammed in an online romance scheme and faced significant debt, became enraged when the truth came to light, even assaulting her husband in the aftermath.

The ordeal began in January when Gao, a 47-year-old businessman from Kajang, Selangor, learned that his 45-year-old wife had been involved in an online relationship with a man claiming to be from London, according to the South China Morning Post.

The man made lavish promises, including a marriage proposal and a private jet for their travels. He also claimed to be planning a massive 50 billion ringgit (US$11.3 billion) investment in a Malaysian theme park.

"The scammer claimed he was planning a 50 billion ringgit investment in a Malaysian theme park, and my wife believed him completely. She handed over her insurance payout from a cervical cancer diagnosis six years ago, and even took out high-interest loans, transferring over 1 million ringgit to him," Gao said.

In June, Gao filed for divorce.

Soon after, loan sharks appeared at their home, demanding repayment and threatening to abduct their children when Gao refused to pay.

"I don’t know exactly how much she owes, but her father recently paid off 10,000 ringgit on her behalf. Now, more loan sharks are pursuing us, and she has even directed them to me for money," he explained.

Gao revealed that his wife had struggled with mental instability for 15 years but refused medical treatment. The revelation of the scam worsened her condition, leading to more frequent emotional outbursts. Unable to cope with being deceived, she directed her frustration toward Gao, resulting in violent behavior.

The couple, who had been married for 16 years, have lived separately for six months, and are in the process of divorce. Their four children, aged six to 15, remain with their mother while Gao has moved out.

The wife has not responded to the allegations, and the case has sparked outrage online, with many condemning her actions.

One commenter wrote: "It’s true, you can never wake someone who is pretending to sleep."

Another added: "Oh my God, please divorce quickly. She is really foolish, reckless, and violent."
