Thirteen specialists from six countries will meet in Hanoi on Oct. 17-18 to discuss advances in hip and knee surgery, including robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and minimally invasive techniques.

Hong Ngoc Phuc Truong Minh General Hospital will host the two-day symposium "Advances in Hip and Knee Surgery," featuring 18 presentations and two live surgical demonstrations by specialists from Vietnam, Austria, Japan, Germany, India and Taiwan (China).

The program will cover advances in joint replacement, preservation and reconstruction, including surgical techniques and the application of technologies such as robotics, AI and surgical navigation to support planning and precision.

Le Quang Huy, head of the hospital's Department of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery, said the event would combine scientific discussions with practical training.

"The symposium provides a forum for updating specialist knowledge, with a program developed in line with the surgical training standards of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England)," Huy said.

The first day, Oct. 17, will feature two scientific sessions covering primary joint surgery, revision joint replacement, and revision arthroscopic surgery.

Topics will include minimally invasive hip replacement, kinematically aligned knee replacement, robotic-assisted surgery and AI applications. Dietmar Krappinger of Innsbruck Medical University in Austria will discuss total hip replacement for acetabular fractures, while Jaiman Sharma of Medanta The Medicity in India will examine how AI and robotics can support surgical planning, implant positioning and personalized knee replacement.

Other speakers, including Christian Koidl of Innsbruck Medical University and Chao Ping Chen of Taichung Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan (China), will discuss knee preservation and reconstruction. The second session will focus on revision hip and knee surgery, including reconstruction of bone defects, treatment of fractures around artificial joints, and revision ligament reconstruction. These procedures can be more complex than initial operations because surgeons must assess bone loss, implant stability and the risk of complications.

Krappinger will discuss revision hip replacement in Austria, while Pai Han Wang of Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan (China) will present approaches to reconstructing bone defects. Hiranaka Takafumi, director of the Joint Surgery Center at Takatsuki General Hospital in Japan, will discuss revision knee replacement.

Phan Ba Hai, deputy head of the Department of Upper Extremity Surgery and Sports Medicine at Viet Duc University Hospital, will address ways to reduce graft failure after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.

On the morning of Oct. 18, two live procedures will be broadcast from the operating room to the conference hall. The first will demonstrate SuperPATH, a minimally invasive approach to hip replacement. The second procedure will involve revision anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction combined with lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET), a technique used to improve knee stability in patients indicated for revision ligament surgery.

Hong Ngoc surgeons will perform both operations under the technical guidance of specialists from Austria and Germany. Participants will observe the surgical techniques firsthand and discuss clinical decision-making and strategies for managing complications from the initial surgery.

The hospital said the symposium aims to strengthen specialist training and promote professional exchange between Vietnamese and international surgeons. Hong Ngoc General Hospital has been recognized by the Royal College of Surgeons of England as an international surgical training center.

Doctors interested in attending can register through the symposium registration page.
