My mother-in-law once explained that in my husband’s hometown, there is a tradition of exchanging gifts between in-laws during the Tet Lunar New Year. Every year, my husband’s family would either send gifts directly or ask him to buy gifts for my family, and my parents would reciprocate. These gifts typically have a value of around VND200,000-300,000 (US$7.9-$11.8).
However, for the past few years, only my parents have continued sending gifts to my in-laws. I should mention that my in-laws are not financially stable, and much of their income comes from their children, with my husband and me being the primary contributors. Although they are just over 60 years old, they haven’t worked in nearly a decade.
Should I give gifts to my parents and present them as being from my in-laws?
