Jake Paul credits boxing for saving his life after $30M loss and suicidal thoughts

The American YouTuber-turned-boxer began boxing in 2020 after struggling with heavy drinking, drug use, and public backlash from his brother’s actions.

In early 2018, Logan faced widespread outrage after posting a video of a suicide victim in Japan’s Aokigahara forest, causing a ripple effect that impacted Jake as well.

"I got lumped into all my brother’s hate," Jake shared in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on Oct. 9. "The suicide forest thing basically ruined my career and income. I lost probably $30 million in deals. There was one $15 million deal for retail products that fell apart due to a morality clause."

Jake admitted that this led him into a downward spiral, resulting in alcohol and drug abuse. He hit rock bottom and even contemplated suicide, formulating what he called a "crazy plan" to take his own life. However, he ultimately decided not to go through with it. "I wasn't going to let them win," Jake explained. "I knew that’s what every social media hater wanted—Jake Paul to kill himself."

Boxing, Jake said, gave him a new sense of purpose, offering structure, improved health, and a supportive community. He credits the sport with saving his life and making it his main focus.

Now 27, Jake is preparing for an exhibition match against former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, 58, scheduled for Nov. 15 at AT&T Stadium in Texas.

The bout, originally set for July 20, was postponed due to Tyson’s health issues. This will be Tyson’s first professional appearance since 2005, while Jake enters the match fresh off a victory by TKO against MMA fighter Mike Perry in July.
