According to The Star, the upcoming sequel was confirmed when American actress Anne Hathaway, who portrayed teenage princess Mia Thermopolis in the first two films, announced her return to the franchise in a video posted on her social media on Oct. 5.

In the clip, Hathaway, wearing a mustard-yellow sweater, playfully signaled the numbers one, two, and three with her fingers, referencing the two original films and the upcoming sequel. The video also featured scenes of Hathaway and co-star Julie Andrews—who played Queen Clarisse Renaldi, Mia’s royal grandmother—joyfully exclaiming "Shut up!" in a nod to one of the franchise’s most iconic moments.
"Miracles happen," Hathaway wrote in the caption. "Back to Genovia with Adele Lim, Disney, and Somewhere Pictures. The fairy tale continues."
Deadline reported that this will mark Lim’s second directorial project, following her debut last year with the film "Joy Ride."

"As a diehard fan of the original "Princess Diaries," I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life," Lim, 49, expressed to Variety, sharing her enthusiasm for the project.
She further added that the series celebrates "female power, joy and mentorship," values she is excited to highlight in the new film.
It remains uncertain whether Hathaway, 42, and Andrews, 89, will reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel.
