Vietnam topped Group B of the 2022 Women's AFF Cup Monday after defeating Timor Leste 6-0.

Heavy rains delayed the match 30 minutes and the Vietnamese team set about fulfilling coach Mai Duc Chung's target of scoring as many goals as possible to create a significant goal difference in order to take the group’s top spot back from Myanmar.

However, on a wet, slippery surface, the Vietnamese players couldn't deploy their usual ball control game and switched to playing long balls instead. Despite the change in style of play, the women ended the first half four goals ahead with Huynh Nhu scoring a brace. The other goals were scored by Van Su and Tuyet Dung.

In the second half, Chung allowed young players - Tran Thi Thu Xuan, Thanh Nha, and Nguyen Thi My Anh – to get into the game..

Van Su added one more goal to her tally and Thuy Trang found the net once as the Vietnamese women sealed a 6-0 victory over Timor Leste.

Having defeated Cambodia and Laos in previous games, Vietnam are now at the top of Group B with nine points and a total of 14 goals, surpassing Myanmar with nine points and 11 goals.

The top spot is a great advantage for Vietnam before their last Group B against Myanmar at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The women’s AFF Championship is being played in Manila from July 4 to 17.
