The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said Vietnam will count on their Asian Cup-experienced head coach Philippe Troussier to enjoy a successful tournament.

"Vietnam will have the advantage of being guided by a coach who has tasted Asian Cup glory," the AFC wrote. "Their best in the continental showpiece has been quarter-final appearances in 2007 and 2019 but Vietnam will feel they have the quality and experience to challenge Asia's best."

At the 2024 Asian Cup that will take place in January, Vietnam are in group D with Japan, Iraq and Indonesia.

Troussier is no stranger to Japan, as he coached the team from 1998 to 2002, with the highlight being the 2000 Asian Cup title. He’s also considered one of the best coaches in the history of the Asian Cup, according to AFC.

"While the revered Park Hang-seo, who played a pivotal role in Vietnam's rise, is no longer with the team, Vietnam have a proven winner in Troussier," AFC added.

Indonesia and Iraq are also Vietnam’s competition in the second round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Vietnam will start the 2024 Asian Cup campaign with a game agaisnt Japan on Jan. 14, before taking on Indonesia on Jan. 19 and Iraq five days later.
