Football Association of Malaysia president Hamidin Mohd Amin is optimistic about the chance of Malaysia’s football team beating both Thailand and Vietnam at this year’s SEA Games in Cambodia.

After winning 5-1 in the opening match against Laos on Wednesday, Malaysia will play Thailand on Saturday and then Vietnam on Monday.

Amin said Malaysia's next two matches are vital.

"We will play the two matches against Thailand and Vietnam like they are finals. If we win against these two teams, Malaysia can believe in the chance of winning the gold medal," he said in a meeting with local media in Cambodia Thursday night.

Amin believes that Malaysia can beat Thailand and Vietnam so long as the Malaysian players are mentally comfortable and unworried.

In the remaining three matches, Malaysia will meet Thailand on Saturday, Vietnam on May 8 and Singapore May 11. Vietnam will meet Thailand in the tournament’s last game on May 11.

Malaysia’s squad for the 32nd SEA Games includes many players who have played for the national team, such as defenders Azam Azmi and Ruventhiran Vengadesan, midfielder Mukhairi Ajmal and striker Haqimi Azim.

At SEA Games 31 in Vietnam, Malaysia entered the semifinals but were eliminated by the host, then lost to Indonesia in the bronze medal match.
