Nguyen Minh Hung, head of the Phu Quoc public construction management board, said Friday Licogi13 Technology and Special Material company is the contractor for the project, and would use electric and smokeless incinerators.
The landfill in Cua Duong Commune was created three years prior and spreads over five hectares.
Licogi13 has cleared over 1,000 m2 of land and is preparing to install equipment there.
Local authorities will renovate the roads leading to the landfill and connect power supply to the site.
During the burning process, chemicals will be sprayed over the landfill to contain the stench.
Phu Quoc has the Bai Bon waste treatment plant, but it stopped operating over six months ago following an unsuccessful trial run.
Kien Giang Province has handed over the plant to the Phu Quoc economic zone management board to look for new investors.
Phu Quoc, which has a population of over 180,000, is a popular tourist destination, receiving around five million visitors last year. It generates around 180 tons of garbage every day.
By 2030 the island is expected to have two waste treatment plants, one each in Cua Duong and Ham Minh Commune.
