$41M coastal embankment planned for Hoi An

The province seeks to build embankments by 2026 to reduce the impacts of waves, spanning over 2,000 m, according to a decision issued by Quang Nam chairman Le Tri Thanh on August 4.

The project aims to reduce erosion and protect the coastline of Hoi An, satisfying the needs for accommodation and economic development for 1,300 families in the area. The embankment would also protect the land and infrastructure for tourism in Cua Dai Ward and neighboring areas.

The Hoi An coastline spans 7.5 km and possesses several beaches, including Cua Dai, Thinh My and An Bang. Cua Dai in particular is considered to be among the 25 most beautiful beaches in Asia, but it has been continually eroding since the turn of the century.

In 2010-2015, Quang Nam invested in several types of embankments worth over VND140 billion, but the projects have been deemed ineffective, and the coast continues to be eroded.
