Singapore’s education ministry plans to double the number of scholarships for excellent Vietnamese students, the Ministry of Education and Training’s International Cooperation Department said.

Nguyen Kim Son, Minister of Education and Training, and his Singaporean counterpart Chun Chun Sing on Monday signed a memorandum on education cooperation, where both countries will bolster cooperation between schools to promote students and teachers exchange.

Both countries would also provide opportunities for students to participate in internship programs, as well as information exchange and honing teachers’ skills. Education ministries of the two countries would provide scholarship opportunities for students as well.

The MoU was signed during Singaporean PM Lee Hsien Loong's three-day official visit to Vietnam ending Tuesday.

In a June meeting between the two countries’ education ministries, the Singapore side said there would be an increase in the number of scholarships for excellent Vietnamese secondary and high school students. The number of scholarships available could be twice as much compared to previous years, according to the International Cooperation Department.

Scholarships provided by Singapore’s Ministry of Education (the ASEAN scholarship) are reserved for students from grade 8th to grade 10th, and usually receive applications every February. Those who get the scholarship study two years in school and two years of college preparatory classes in schools designated by the Singaporean government. Scholarships entail yearly living aids, accommodation and tuition, among other support.
