A man from the central city of Da Nang ordered a ‘bouquet’ made from 100 taels of gold worth more than VND7 billion (US$307,000), for his “relative”.

Luong Thi Giau, owner of a flower shop in the southern city of Can Tho, said the man brought 100 taels to her store last Sunday to make the bouquet. A tael is equal to 37.5 grams or 1.2 ounces.

He paid her VND20 million to make it, she said.

It was a gift for a woman in Can Tho city on International Women’s Day (Mar. 8), she quoted the customer as saying.

Gold prices have hit a record-high of nearly VND73 million per tael, which makes the bouquet’s worth around VND7.3 billion.

Luxury bouquets and gifts are not uncommon on festive occasions in Vietnam. Last year an American customer ordered a two-meter high vase with flowers costing VND65 million to gift his wife in Vietnam.

Meanwhile, the prices of Da Lat cut roses have doubled to VND30-50,000 each.
