Two people were arrested Tuesday for swindling VND200 million ($8,286) from a woman they duped into believing they could help cut ties with her "ghost lovers."

Vo Hoai Nhon, 28, and Nguyen Thi Huong, 27, from Ho Chi Minh City, were arrested by police in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue for investigations into allegations of "obtaining property by fraud."

According to police, Huong used a Facebook account under the name "Bi Nguyen" to act as a fortune teller on social media. In early 2021, she became familiar with a woman in Thua Thien-Hue whose troubled love life had prompted her to seek Huong's help. Huong said she was followed by "ghost lovers" and a ritual would be needed to get rid of them.

Huong gave the woman Nhon's phone numbers, telling her that the number belongs to "Master Thinh," who specializes in such rituals.

Huong and Nhon then took turns texting the woman, asking her to send money for the rituals to "cut ties with ghost lovers."

Authorities allege that the two received VND200 million, yet neither bought items required for the rituals, nor did they actually organize or host any rituals. The woman thought she was tricked, and so reported the matter to the police.
