A former teacher in central Nghe An Province was sentenced to 20 years in jail for smuggling heroin for a Lao man for just VND1 million ($40).

Xong Ba Xuan, 44, was sentenced to imprisonment for drug trafficking by the Nghe An People's Court on Wednesday.

Xuan told the court that he regretted what he did, adding that it has caused him to lose his career as a physical education teacher, and his wife and children to move away.

He said he wishes for leniency so he can redeem himself for his family.

Xuan met the Lao man in Que Phong District on Sept. 18 last year. Authorities said this man hired Xuan to deliver a heroin packet to a village in the same district, promising him VND1 million as payment. Xuan agreed and received the packet.

Thirty minutes later, as he was riding a motorbike towards the village, he was arrested by the Que Phong District police who seized the heroin.

Authorities are investigating the identity of the Lao man.
