Vietnam stocks gained amid global markets’ decline

Vietnam's benchmark VN-Index rose 0.97% to 1,228.33 points Thursday while global markets edged down.

The index closed 11.79 points higher after gaining 11.39 points in the previous session.

Trading on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange decreased by 32% to VND12.18 trillion (US$479 million).

The VN-30 basket, comprising the 30 largest capped stocks, saw 24 tickers gained and 6 fell.

MWG of electronics retail chain Mobile World went up 3.3%, followed by CTG of state-owned lender VietinBank with a 2.9% increase.

VPB of private lender VPBank rose 2.7% and STB of Ho Chi Minh City-based lender Sacombank increased by 2%.

Three blue chips dropped. SAB of brewer Sabeco fell 0.4%, while BCM of Becamex Investment and Industrial Development and VJC of budget airline Vietjet both went down 0.3%.

Foreign investors were net sellers to the tune of VND858 billion, mainly selling VHM of property giant Vinhomes and FPT of IT giant FPT Corporation.

The HNX-Index for stocks on the Hanoi Stock Exchange, home to mid and small caps, rose 0.21%, while the UPCoM-Index for the Unlisted Public Companies Market went up 0.45%.

Global shares edged lower on Wednesday as markets weighed tensions between Russia and the West, while bitcoin hit a new record high and the dollar gained after three straight sessions of losses, Reuters reported.

Benchmark S&P 500 finished flat while the Dow gained and the Nasdaq ended lower. Healthcare, energy and materials stocks were the biggest gainers, while consumer discretionary, financials and technology equities were the biggest drag.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.32% to 43,408.47, the S&P 500 was flat at 5,917.11 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.11% to 18,966.14.

The MSCI All-World index was down 0.16% to 847.84. European shares finished down 0.02%.
