Prices of Ri6 durians plummeted while those of Monthong durians rose on Friday in the Mekong Delta and Central Highlands, Vietnam's top durian-growing areas.

Highest-grade Ri6 durian price fell by 15.6% from Thursday to VND135,000 (US$5.34) per kilogram in both regions.

Monthong durians were sold at VND185,000 per kilogram in the Mekong Delta, up 5.7%, and VND180,000 in the Central Highlands, a 2.9% increase.

Export prices of the Ri6 variety and the Thai cultivar were unchanged at VND152,000 and VND179,000 per kilogram, respectively.

The Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang, a major durian producer, has approximately 15,000 hectares under cultivation, yielding nearly 400,000 tons of fruit per year.

About 50-70% of this area is used for the off-season harvest, which runs from November to March.
