The U.S. dollar weakened against the Vietnamese dong Monday morning while trading lower against some major currencies.

Vietcombank sold the greenback at VND26,381, down 0.01% over the weekend. On the black market, the currency dropped 0.04% to around VND27,158.

The State Bank of Vietnam lowered its reference rate by 0.01% to VND25,125.

Globally, the dollar hovered near its lowest in almost three months on Monday on expectations of the Federal Reserve cutting interest rates next year, Reuters reported.

The prospect of the Fed cutting rates next year has kept the dollar under pressure, while the specter of a new Fed Chair that may be dovish and willing to lower rates looms large.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six rivals, was 0.08% lower at 97.953, on track for a 9.7% drop for the year, its steepest since 2017.

The Japanese yen firmed 0.2% to 156.13 per U.S. dollar after a slightly hawkish summary of opinions from the Bank of Japan's policy meeting in December. Still, it remains close to the 10-month low of 157.9.

The euro advanced 0.1% to $1.1780. The Australian dollar was little changed at $0.6714. New Zealand's kiwi was steady at $0.5830.
