Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh rang the bell to open trading at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday local time.

Chinh, who is on a six-day trip to the U.S, had been invited by the world's largest stock exchange, where, welcoming him, NYSE vice president John Tuttle said: "We are willing to help get Vietnamese businesses listed on the NYSE and cooperate in cross-listing on each other's markets."

After a meeting with NYSE executives and writing a comment in the guestbook, the PM stepped up to the podium and rang the bell to mark the start of trading at 9:30 a.m.

He said it was an honor to be invited again after the first time in May last year when he rang the bell to close a session.

He described the NYSE’s market capitalization of US$40 trillion very impressive.

He called on the bourse to inform investors about the favorable investment and business environment in Vietnam based on the "warm" political relationship between his country and the U.S., especially after they upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership during President Joe Biden’s visit to Vietnam on Sept. 10-11.

He also wanted the NYSE to help link up the Vietnamese stock market with itself and other leading global stock exchanges, and provide technical support and human resource training to it.

Chinh, who started his working trip to the U.S. on Sept. 17, wraps it up in New York after earlier visiting San Francisco and Washington.
